About Building a Second Brain

Building a Second Brain is Tiago Forte’s method for personal knowledge management, the practice of saving, organizing, and using the information you encounter across books, articles, conversations, and your own thinking. Forte’s argument is that most people consume enormous amounts of information but retain and use very little of it because they have no system for turning inputs into outputs.

The core framework is CODE: Capture (save anything that resonates, without over-filtering), Organize (sort captured material into a structure called PARA: Projects, Areas, Resources, and Archives), Distill (progressively summarize your notes so the most important ideas float to the top), and Express (use your organized knowledge to create something: a document, a presentation, a decision, a product).

The PARA system is the organizing backbone. Projects are short-term efforts with deadlines and clear outcomes. Areas are ongoing responsibilities with standards to maintain (like health or finances). Resources are topics of interest you want to learn about. Archives are inactive items from the other three categories. The logic is that everything you save should be organized by when and how you’ll use it, not by which subject it belongs to.

For founders, who are constantly taking in information from conversations, meetings, articles, podcasts, and books, having a system for this matters more than it might seem. Forte’s argument is that your “second brain” lets you think more clearly because you’re not trying to hold everything in your head. When you need to write a strategy doc, prepare for a board meeting, or make a decision, you can pull from organized notes rather than starting from scratch.

The writing is clear and well-structured. Forte has taught this material as an online course for years, and the book reflects that teaching experience: concepts build on each other and each chapter includes practical exercises. Some readers find the system overengineered for their needs, while others find it exactly the structure they were missing. The book is tool-agnostic, working with any note-taking app, though Forte has a preference for apps like Notion and Evernote.
