Getting Real

The Smarter, Faster, Easier Way to Build a Successful Web Application

Book by Jason Fried

Basecamp's original manifesto on building web products with small teams and limited resources. The book argues for launching fast, building less, and letting real user feedback guide development instead of upfront planning and feature bloat.

About Getting Real

Getting Real was one of the first books to articulate what would later become the lean startup philosophy, though it predates that term by several years. Originally published as a PDF in 2006, it captures the 37signals (now Basecamp) approach to building web applications: small teams, minimal features, fast launches, and constant iteration based on real usage.

The book is organized into short, punchy chapters that read more like blog posts than traditional book sections. Topics include why less is more in product development, why you should build half a product rather than a half-finished product, why to hire the right people instead of adding more people, and why getting something live matters more than getting something perfect.

Many of the ideas feel familiar now because they’ve been absorbed into mainstream startup thinking. But when Getting Real was first published, the dominant approach was waterfall development with long planning cycles and large teams. The book was a direct challenge to that mindset, and it influenced a generation of web developers and product builders.

For founders starting their first company, Getting Real is one of the more practically useful books available. It covers everything from how to handle feature requests (say no to most of them) to how to write interface copy (short and clear) to how to price your product (charge something from day one). The advice is specific and opinionated, and it comes from people who actually built products this way.

The book’s age shows in some of the technical references, but the underlying principles about simplicity, speed, and focus have not changed. It is available to read free online at basecamp.com/books/getting-real, which makes it an easy recommendation for anyone building a web product with limited time and money. For anyone who prefers building over planning, it remains one of the most honest books about what the early stages of product development actually look like.
